    [Galveston IMAGE] Parade of Lights celebrates Thanksgiving Enjoy a bit of holiday cheer during a new Galveston tradition with the 3rd Annual Galveston Harbor Parade of Lights. The Parade begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27.

    Mardi Gras! Galveston salutes Texas 2000 Galveston will salute "Texas 2000" during its 16th annual Mardi Gras celebration. The island is home to the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas, Mardi Gras! Galveston drawing an estimated half million revelers to the Island over a twelve-day period.

    Retired seniors enjoy Galveston Island More than 600 Winter Texans, retired senior citizens in their early 50's and up, escape from cold weather in the Midwest and Canada to the temperate weather of Galveston Island. Winter Texans make their home in Galveston at RV parks, condominiums and area hotels.

    [Galveston IMAGE] History of Galveston Island Galveston Island has been occupied since the early 1500's, serving as a home to Akokisa Indians (once thought to be the Karankawa Indians), the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte, "little Ellis Island," "the Wall Street of the Southwest," the richest city in Texas and the site of the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.

    Isle offers perfects solution for shoppers If you're tired of the hustle and bustle of crowded shopping malls, come to Galveston Island and shop The Strand National Historic Landmark District and the Downtown area. This historic area offers more than 100 unique shops to help you find that certain little item for which you've been searching.

    Spend the day at a sun-filled beach, venture into a tropical rainforest, or take a trip back into time. Do all this and much more on Galveston Island. Galveston Island offers a wide variety of activities for every age and is a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon or weekend.

    Air Tours of Galveston Island, 2115 Terminal Drive (Scholes Field main terminal, Galveston's Municipal Airport), offers aerial tours of beautiful Galveston Island. Tours last 30 to 40 minutes and include a run down the beach over to the ship channel and on to Bolivar peninsula. The return trip flies over UTMB and Pelican Island as well as the Bishops Palace, Sacred Heart Church, downtown Galveston, Galveston Bay and the causeway bridge. As the pilot circles to land at the airport, passengers get a fantastic view of Moody Gardens, the Pyramid and The COLONEL Paddlewheeler. For information call 409-740-IFLY.

    American National Observation Area, 20th and Market Street, offers a spectacular view from Galveston's only skyscraper. Tours are open for groups only. Contact the Galveston Historical Foundation at (409) 765-7834.

    A new attraction to the Island is Galveston Harbour Tours, Pier 22, providing a 45-minute narrated boat tour of the oldest seaport in Texas. Guests get a close up view of the sugar, banana, cotton and sulfur docks; the Grain Elevator; and the "Mosquito Fleet" shrimping boats along the Wharf.     Galveston Island Trolley, 2100 Seawall or 2016 Strand. Board fixed rail trolley cars built in a turn of the century style similar to those used in Galveston from the late 1800's to 1938. The trolley provides a unique mode of transportation from Galveston's Seawall to The Strand Landmark Historic District, with beautiful historic homes and other points of interest along the route.     [Galveston IMAGE] The Ocean Star, Pier 19, operates its state-of-the-art facility less than an hour from downtown Houston, the world's petroleum capital.     The Great Storm, Pier 21 Theater, gives visitors a glimpse of the devastating 1900 Storm through a multi-image documentary experience. The 27-minute story gives actual accounts from diaries and letters of survivors during and after the storm. Call (409) 765-7834 for information.

    Gulf Greyhound Park, I-45 @ exit 15 in LaMarque, the world's top greyhound racing facility is just fifteen minutes from Galveston. See the country's top greyhound race at up to 45 miles per hour with races every 12 to 15 minutes. The track offers four levels of air-conditioned comfort and Texas' largest restaurant.     One of the most popular Galveston attractions is Moody Gardens, One Hope Blvd. Moody Gardens features a 10 story, 40,000 square-foot Rainforest Pyramid, housing thousands of exotic plants, birds, butterflies and fish, offering an incredible tropical environment complete with waterfalls, cliffs, caverns, wetlands and forests.

    The 3-D IMAX Theater will keep you jumping out of your seat and the experience is so real you'll reach out to touch what seems to be just inches away. Palm Beach offers a white sand beach with a blue lagoon featuring a 30-foot Yellow Submarine with octopus tentacle slides, a periscope and water guns for kids. The newest attraction to Moody Gardens, the Bat Cave, is the largest bat exhibit in the Southwest.

    The COLONEL Paddlewheeler is also docked at Moody Gardens. The COLONEL is an 800 passenger authentic reproduction of an 1800's paddlewheel offering day and evening cruises on Offatt's Bayou. For information call (409) 740-7797.

    Rosenberg Library, 23rd and Sealy, is Texas' first public library which opened in 1904. The library offers historical exhibits, artwork and archives relating to early Texas history and a complete library collection and services. For information call (409) 763-8854.

    RECREATION Galveston Island is widely known for its beautiful Gulf beaches. To insure the safety of visitors and encourage more families to frequent Galveston Island beaches, the City of Galveston and the Galveston Park Board of Trustees have cooperatively banned alcohol consumption from most of its public beaches and the Seawall with the exception of licensed concession areas.

    [Galveston IMAGE] Stewart Beach Park, 6th and Seawall Blvd., is Galveston's premier family beach park. To entertain families, the Park Board sponsors family-oriented events, such as volleyball tournaments, sandcastle competitions and concerts.

    The park features a children's playground, umbrella and chair rentals, volleyball courts, an outdoor pavilion with a snack bar, souvenir shop, restrooms and bath house. In addition, Amaze'N Texas (a life-size human maze), the WaterCoaster and Patio Bar, Bumper Boats and the Stewart Beach Mini Golf Course are located at Stewart.

    Another family beach is Dellanera RV Park, FM 3005 at 7 Mile Road (west end of the Seawall). Enjoy a casual stroll along 1000 feet of sparkling sandy beaches at your beachfront "home-away-from-home." Amenities include umbrella/chair rentals, beach-side restrooms, bath house, children's play area and picnic sites.     Galveston's East Beach (also called R.A. Apffel Park), Seawall and Boddeker Drive, features the Big Reef Nature Park where bird watchers can catch a glimpse of their favorite local species. The Park has an outdoor pavilion with a snack bar, gift shop, showers, game room and volleyball courts. Live music, concerts, and an outdoor bar, add to the entertainment most weekends during the summer. Alcohol consumption is allowed at this beach park. For information call (409) 762-3278.

    [Galveston IMAGE] Seawolf Park, Pelican Island via Seawolf Parkway (51st Street), built on an immigration station site offers a three-story pavilion with a view of Galveston harbor, picnic sites, a playground area and a fishing pier. A World War II submarine CAVALLA, destroyer escort USS STEWART and other military hardware are on display and open for tours. Seawolf Park is available for company picnics and private parties.
